The anxiety of Junior faculty members of NITs

Most of the NITs have started implementing the sixth pay scales offered by the central government. The teachers who are Assistant professors and above have got a good deal. However, the sixth pay recommendations have affected the juniors severely.Particularly those who joined with a promise that they will get a good deal after the implementation of NIT Act.
1. The entry level faculty members have lost their hard earned inrements to the merging of service in the initial stages. However, for the seniors this problem has not come.
2. The seven increments promised for PhD has not been given to those who joined the position after submitting their thesis and subsequently received their degrees while in service.
3. No clear order has been provided for the above case and such faculty members are receiving advance increments of just 2 like their UGC counterparts adding fuel to their already existing agony.
4. The promotion option available for an incumbant PhD holder to apply for Assistant Professor post in the scale of 12,000-420-18000 (presently 8000 AGP)has been removed by MHRD because of the renaming of Lecturers to Assistant professors.
5. After removing such an option, MHRD has told, to move to Associate Professor, one should have EIGHT years of experience and out of which 3 years in the AGP of 8000.
6. The above condition implies that a Lecturer can never dream of applying for Associate Professor through direct recruitment for atleast 9 years except the present assistant professors who are going to get the 8000 AGP .
7. Moreover, a Lecture with PhD is getting a salary of around 32,000 rupees and an associate professor is getting approximately 65,000. Such a huge difference in pay may delay the existing lecturers to move to PB4 because of obvious reasons.
Thus the Lecturers are the most affected in the whole of the sixth pay beneficiaries. There was a huge expectation on NIT Council meet. However, nothing much has come out of it. The Government, in particular, the MHRD and the Hbl. Minister Shri Kapil Sibal should look into the above grievances of Junior faculty members.
It should be recollected that a seperate committee was formed for NITs to look into the ways and means to attract young faculty members and to retain the existing faculty. The government has done everything possible to retain the seniors. It should look into the grievances of the juniors compassionately.
